Special Effects – Headphones

The Bongiovi V3D headphone algorithm projects a stereo media source into virtual space around the user’s head.  Learn more about “Virtual 7.1” here.  This algorithm is controlled using a set of presets that represent different virtual speaker arrangements.  These presets offer a variety of user experiences:

  • Wide Normal – This represents a good default virtual speaker arrangement that works well with gaming on standard size monitors.
  • Wide Expanded – Similar to Wide Normal with more extension toward the sides and rear of the user.  Better for gaming on wide monitors.
  • Middle Clarity – Keeps the sound field toward the front of the user for less distraction of side-channel content.
  • Middle Expanded – A blended sound field that creates a subdued sound cloud in front of the user.  Good for quiet therapeutic applications where side-channel content may be distracting.
  • Mono – Left and Right channels are simply summed together. No special effects are applied.
  • Surround Enhance – A blended sound field with a wide, yet loosely defined image.  Good for older movies and retro gaming.
  • Surround Max – A widest possible sound field that reaches slightly behind the user.
  • The slider below the preset sets the number of taps used in the V3D FIR filters. Reducing the number of taps saves CPU resources. Adjust this control to balance the tone and resource usage of V3D for your target application.
